As part of its efforts to improve the hospital environment, the MAKE Better association proposed to AP-HP (L'Assistance publique - Hôpitaux de Paris) that an artist work in the oncology department of the Pitié Salpêtrière hospital in Paris.
The aim of this initiative is to use in situ artistic intervention to transform a space often perceived as strictly functional, in order to infuse it with a more sensitive and human dimension. The aim is to contribute to a calmer atmosphere for patients, carers, families and visitors, by offering a warmer, more inspiring visual environment.
Beyond embellishment, this approach is part of a wider reflection on the place of art in care settings: how can an artistic gesture modify the perception of the hospital, alleviate anxiety, create a bond, invite a different kind of presence?
AP-HP, Studio Artera and MAKE Office, in conjunction with the MAKE Better association, have launched a project with artist Itchi to transform the corridors of the oncology department at the Pitié Salpêtrière Hospital. In a course of treatment marked by waiting and uncertainty, a more human and welcoming environment can make all the difference.
Far from the usual neutral, aseptic tones, Itchi's colorful compositions play on the psychology of color, offering an immediate impact on mood. They transform a corridor into a breathing space, a visual interlude that takes the focus away from medical preoccupations for a moment.
Far from being a mere aesthetic addition, these artistic interventions breathe new energy into the space, offering both comfort to patients and a calmer working environment for caregivers.
