Romain Lalire is a multidisciplinary artist whose career path is one of the most unique in the French contemporary arts scene. It all begins with the body: his training in the art of mime at the Marcel Marceau International School of Mimodrama raises the central question underlying all his work. How can one make visible what is not visible? How can one give form to the invisible?
Romain Lalire crosses disciplines the way others cross borders: by pushing them further. From mime, he moved on to stage magic, creating the visual effects for Alexis Michalik’s *Le Cercle des illusionnistes*, *Baroque fantastique* by the Les Ombres theater company, and *La ménagerie de verre*, directed by Charlotte Rondelez. Then came the shift toward contemporary art and digital media: mapping, augmented reality, generative software, and sensory sensors. For him, these tools are not ends in themselves; they are mediums in the service of a persistent philosophical question: what is reality?
In 2018, Romain Lalire presented "Kumo" at the Palais de Tokyo as part of the Do Disturb festival: an interactive installation that creates a luminous cloud that reacts to the presence of visitors. A revised version will be presented in Shanghai for the launch of Cartier’s “Magicien” collection. He regularly collaborates with leading luxury houses—Montblanc, Hermès, and Van Cleef & Arpels—on projects that blend performance, installation, and technology.
The works of artist Romain Lalire take us into a world where the invisible is sublimated, blending the real and the unreal, shattering the boundaries that separate them. His performances, tinged with magic and delicacy, encourage us to question our relationship with the image, marked by the omnipresence of technology in our daily lives, deconstructing our perception of reality. These contemporary artworks offer us mysterious asides, prompting us to take a step back from the different ways we perceive reality and, above all, to reawaken that part of wonder within us that we sometimes tend to put to one side.
