Mathias Bensimon

From contemporary painting to monumental frescoes

A graduate of the Beaux-Arts in Paris, Mathias Bensimon is an artist who places light at the heart of his work. Light as medium and substance, but also light as revealing intelligence. As a testimony to the different manifestations of reality, light can appear to us in a multitude of forms and reflections, raising the question of the visible and the invisible.

Mathias Bensimon tirelessly researches and explores new experiences of light through gestures and color combinations that are unique in contemporary art. During his five years at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, Mathias Bensimon came face to face with the reality of materials, learning from renowned teachers and iconic craftsmen.

An avid traveler, he has traveled the world to encounter new ways of creating, thinking, dancing and meditating, in order to perpetually enrich his artistic approach. Sometimes going back to the origins of creation, when artistic expression was closely linked to magic and spirituality, he confronts the thin, almost mystical frontiers between worlds that still exist today in many parts of the globe. During his training, this contemporary artist had the opportunity to join the studio of Ann Veronica Janssens, the famous visual artist, with whom he was able to explore the relationship between art, experimentation and perception through the knowledge of this enthusiast for light and transparency effects.

Then, in the studio of painter Wernher Bouwens, he took a closer look at color, printing and installation, one of the pillars of his work. Finally, working with contemporary dancer and choreographer Emmanuelle Huynh has enabled the artist to deepen his understanding of the relationship between body and space, to achieve a true symbiosis between light, space, dance, music and color in his contemporary painting practice. Whether on illuminated panels or in monumental frescoes, Mathias Bensimon perfectly captures the vibrations of the site, sublimating it through his mastery of painting. In 2020, Mathias Bensimon created a monumental fresco for the Altarea Cogedim headquarters in Paris, designed by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte.

In October 2022, the artist will exhibit at Paulin Paulin & Paulin alongside Anish Kapoor, Ann Veronica Janssens, Lita Albuquerque and James Turrell. In 2023, Mathias Bensimon will exhibit at the Mairie du 10e, under the aegis of the Mairie de Paris, with a view to involving his art in the city, at the Musée d'Orsay as part of the "Pastels" exhibition, and at Galleria Continua... He produces a series of performances for Art Explora and recently created a fresco in the interior garden of the Ministry of Culture in Paris entitled "Jardin Cosmique".

The artist has just completed a solo exhibition in Tokyo and Kyoto, and is preparing a major fresco project at the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, to be unveiled in 2025.

A new look at contemporary art

Mathias Bensimon's works are portals to new perceptions of the world through the prism of light. Mathias Bensimon's demanding, precise and comprehensive use of materials enables him to push back the boundaries of creation and explore magnetic visual territories, where light is king. Mathias Bensimon is a key artist on the young French contemporary scene.
